As a result of the unkind treatment of Olivia, the duke gave up all that he liked and passed his time listening to music and love-songs. He neglected the company of the wise and learned lords. He even gave up hunting. He would converse all day long with young Cesario.
The duke told Viola the story of his love for Olivia. Listening to the story of the duke’s love for
Olivia, Viola pitied him. But at the same time, she herself fell in love with him. Yet Viola related the despair of Orsino to Olivia quite sincerely. Although she loved Orsino, being a noble lady she hold back her love.
